History of Augusta:
The town of Augusta, located in the southeast
corner of Hancock County, was laid out in the
winter of 1835-36. When the early settlers came
into the region in the early 1830's, there were
large stands of timber which have long since
disappeared. The terrain, for the most part is
rolling prairie land, excellent for farming.
William D. Abernethy, Samuel B. Mead, and Joel
Catlin were the original proprietors of the land
where the village now stands. One of the men
had lived in Augusta, Georgia prior to their
settling in Hancock County, and gave the name
of his former residence to the village and later
to the township.
The village of Augusta is the only incorporated
area in the township now; however, two other
communities, Pulaski and Mechanicsville, did
exist in the past. Further north in the township,
just west of the Burlington tracks and Highway
61, is the Tri-County Country Club. The remainder
of the township is divided into farm tracts of
varying acreage.
Augusta is currently occupied by various businesses
as well as a Post Office, Library, Volunteer
Fire Department, and Banking facility.
